In partnership with the National Weather Service (NWS) Buffalo forecast office, Erie and Niagara County amateur radio clubs held a joint SKYWARN severe weather spotter training seminar. Over 100 radio operators completed the certification, learning advanced cloud identification, severe storm tracking, and real-time reporting procedures.
Trained SKYWARN spotters serve as the eyes and ears of meteorologists during severe thunderstorms, flash flooding, tornadic activity, and severe winter weather across Western New York.
During active severe weather events, designated WNY net control stations collect ground-truth weather reports from amateur spotters and relay them directly to the NWS Buffalo office via dedicated VHF/UHF repeater links.
